Search and Rescue

Search and Rescue picture

Taiwan is surrounded by oceans. Whether it is for national security, economic development, or people's livelihood, the nation has a close relationship with the sea. Taiwan!|s territorial neighbors are China, Japan, and the Philippines. With treacherous coral reefs and shoals and frequent typhoons, the Administration's sailors must endure the hardships to secure their safety when sailing.

On the January 28, 2000, the Administration established a Search and Rescue and aid operational system to carry out Search and Rescue operations, provide marine disaster aid, assist wrecked ships and personnel searches, as well as supervise emergency medical aid. With close cooperation of relevant units, the Search and Rescue response mechanism of the Administration has gradually developed and Search and Rescue forces have also been greatly strengthened. Although the nation is not a member of the International Oceanic Organization, the Administration will continue to fulfill its international responsibilities and its search and rescue duties, as well as continuously upgrade its rescue capacity and cooperate with neighboring countries towards the goal of building a global search and rescue system.
