Human and natural activities such as increasing urbanization, industrialization, overfishing and climate change contribute to marine and coastal degradation and resources depletion. As the sole maritime law enforcement agency in Taiwan, the Coast Guard Administration has proactively promoted marine conservation since its establishment in 2000. To promote marine conservation and sustainability awareness, the CGA has launched a special programme of “Marine Conservation & Sustainability” and taken tougher measures to crack down on illegal fishing and pollution by increasing in coast guard presence in the surrounding waters and coastal areas. Meanwhile, the CGA also works with experts and specialists in marine science, streamlines the agency’s work process, and raises public awareness for marine conservation and sustainability by exploiting the power of social media.
