CGA Intruding Chinese Fishing Vessels in Dong Sha waters

Dongsha Atoll, Taiwan’s first marine national park, is dedicated to the protection of marine ecosystems and serves as the highest-level marine conservation area in the nation, where all forms of fishing and angling are strictly prohibited. Recently, however, illegal incursions by Chinese fishermen have been detected in the area. In response to these violations and in order to preserve the precious marine resources of the Dongsha waters, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) has, since January 2025, repelled 77 instances of Chinese fishing vessel intrusions and detained 6 small boats. As of now, there are no Chinese vessels illegally operating in the area.
The CGA emphasized its unwavering commitment to defending national sovereignty and protecting Dongsha. Over the years, it has repeatedly intercepted illegal Chinese fishing activities in the region, some of which have involved brutal practices such as indiscriminate harvesting and the dismembering of protected species like green sea turtles, reflecting a pattern of egregious misconduct.
To strengthen maritime patrols, the CGA has deployed large patrol vessels to the Dongsha waters, in coordination with the Dongsha Detachment stationed on the island and its multifunctional patrol boats. This joint force maintains round-the-clock vigilance, closely monitoring the movements of Chinese vessels and working tirelessly to defend national sovereignty and ensure the sustainable development of Dongsha’s marine resources.
