China Coast Guard Reenters Kinmen Waters Following Lunar New Year; ROC Taiwan Coast Guard Swiftly Deploys to Expel Intrusion
Shortly after the Lantern Festival, the ROC Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) once again detected activity by Mainland China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels in the Kinmen region. At approximately 14:00 today, Patrol Area Office 12 of the TCGA’s Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch (KMP Branch) detected four CCG ships approaching from the south of Kinmen and immediately dispatched Patrol Vessels to the outer boundary of the Restricted Area for on scenemonitoring and response.
At 15:05, CCG vessels 14521, 14605, 14608, and 14602 entered Taiwan’s Restricted Area from two directions, southeast of Liaoluo and south of Lieyu. The ships operated in two dual-vessel formations. In response, TCGA rapidly deployed four pre-positioned Patrol Boats to perform close-range interception and shadowing maneuvers, while broadcasting firm radio warnings in Mandarin and English, demanding the CCG vessels to withdraw. All movements were fully recorded, and the CCG vessels exited the area by 17:10.
TCGA noted that this marks the first incursion by CCG vessels into Kinmen waters after the Lunar New Year holiday, and also coincides with the one-year anniversary of the February 14, 2024 Kinmen incident. Since that event, Mainland China has conducted 57 incursions into Kinmen’s Restricted Area through grey-zone tactics, posing a long-term threat to regional peace and stability.
In the face of these continued challenges, TCGA emphasized that it has developed comprehensive response mechanisms, and stands ready at all times. TCGA will continue to respond with flexible, mobile, and effective maritime deployments, resolutely defending national sovereignty and ensuring the security of Kinmen’s waters.
