CGA’s Press Response to Coordinated Entry of PRC CG Vessels into Restricted Waters
The Republic of China Taiwan Coast Guard Administration(TCGA) has issued following statements regarding the incursion of a formation of Mainland China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels into southern Restricted Waters of Kinmen on May 6:
In recent weeks, CCG has repeatedly dispatched multiple vessels in coordinated formations, intentionally entering the Restricted and Prohibited Waters south of Kinmen. In response, TCGA’s Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch (KMP Branch) had maintained continuous surveillance through integrated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems. TCGA had also pre-deployed and dispatched patrol boats to shadow, monitor, record their intrusions, and issue radio warnings to compel CCG vessels from maneuvering in Kinmen’s Restricted and Prohibited Waters.
On May 6 at 15:30, four CCG vessels—CCG 14608, 14604, 14512, and 14603—were discovered repeatedly entering the southern Restricted Waters of Kinmen in formation, TCGA, in response, immediately deployed three patrol boats to confront the intrusion in parallel formation, effectively preventing further advancement. By 16:37, the CCG vessels had exited the Restricted Waters.
KMP Branch stated that the southern waters off Kinmen are a major maritime route with high density of vessel traffic, including commercial vessels navigating to and from harbors or awaiting anchorage. The high-speed passage of CCG formations through this area had severely undermined cross-strait stability and had disrupted navigational safety and traffic order. TCGA urges PRC to cease such dangerous maneuvers immediately and to uphold the principles of mutual respect and parity to jointly safeguard maritime order while ensuring the safety and well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Regarding CCG’s ongoing practices of unscheduled, unannounced formations that enter the Restricted and Prohibited Waters around Kinmen, TCGA will continuously carry out 24/7 surveillance measure by utilizing all available reconnaissance systems. TCGA will adhere the guiding principle of “No Provocation, No Conflict, No Evasion, and No Feigning Weakness”, while maintaining a firm law enforcement posture. All PRC official ships entering our Restricted and Prohibited Waters will be expelled to preserve navigational safety and maritime order.
