Eighth Incursion in May: TCGA Once Again Repels Mainland Chinese Coast Guard Vessels in Kinmen-Matsu Waters
May 24, 2024
For the eighth time this month, ROC Taiwan Coast Guard Administration(TCGA) repelled an incursion by Mainland China Coast Guard(CCG) vessels into Taiwan Area’s Restricted Waters near the outlying islands of Dongyin and Wuqiu. The incident occurred one day after Mainland China announced a two-day joint maritime exercise. On May 23, CCG vessels had already entered the said waters and navigated one hour. On May 24, similar formations reappeared, prompting a swift and pre-positioned TCGA response.
At 08:03 this morning, two CCG vessels — 14509 and 14607 — approached Taiwan Area’s Restricted Waters near Dongyin Island at a speed of nearly 10 knots, operating in formation. The third vessel, 14517, cruised outside the water in a supporting role. TCGA deployed patrol boat PP-3586 and PP-3571 for parallel monitoring, issuing radio warnings and expulsion orders. TheCCG vessels exitted the area by 09:00.
Meanwhile, near Wuqiu Island — approximately 100 nautical miles from Dongyin — CCG vessels 14606 and 14506 entered Taiwan Area’s Restricted Waters in a similar formation, with 14502 operating outside the boundary. TCGA responded with patrol boat PP-10039 and PP-10035 to conduct real-time surveillance, recording, and continuous radio orders to vacate the area. TheCCG vessels left the waters by 08:59.
TCGA emphasized that this was the eighth time in May that CCG formations have intruded into the Restricted Waters around Kinmen and Matsu. These repeating incursions threaten maritime navigational safety, undermine regional peace and stability, and are not conducive to promoting equitable cross-strait exchanges.
TCGA once again calls on Mainland China to exercise self-restraint and immediately cease these provocative and irrational activities. TCGAd will continue to safeguard our national sovereignty and security with unwavering resolve.
