First Coordinated Incursion in July: Mainland China Coast Guard Vessels Enter Kinmen Waters; TCGA Responds with active Monitoring and Expulsion
Taiwan Coast Guard Administration(TCGA) confirmed that four Mainland China Coast Guard(CCG) vessels entered Taiwan Area’s Restricted Waters near Kinmen in the early morning hours of July 11. This marked the first coordinated incursion by CCG vessels in the month of July, and the 31st of such incident in 2024 to date.
At approximately 06:00, TCGA’s Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch detected four CCG vessels—hull number 14604, 14603, 14508, and 14607—simultaneously approaching four separate entry points off the boundary of Taiwan Area’s Restricted Waters south of Kinmen. TCGA immediately dispatched four Patrol Boats—PP-3573, PP-3585, PP-10073, and PP-10081—for a one-on-one parallel tracking response.
At 07:00, all four CCG vessels entered the Restricted Waters from multiple directions: east and southeast of Liaoluo, south of Jhuishan, and south of Fengzui. TCGA Patrol Boats tracked each vessel individually, conducted active surveillance, and issued radio warnings. By 09:00, all four CCG vessels had exited the Restricted Water under TCGA’s close distance monitoring.
However, at 10:00, the exact four CCG vessels re-entered the Restricted Waters simultaneously from multiple directions repeatedly. TCGA Patrol Boats once again implemented the “one-on-one” tracking measure. After the second round of tracking and warnings, the CCG vessels fully withdrew from the Restricted Waters at approximately 12:00. The entire engagement lasted around two hours.
This was the first coordinated incursion by CCG vessels into Kinmen waters in July. For the current year to date, there have been 31 separate entries in total into waters under Taiwan’s jurisdiction. These repeating actions undermine maritime navigational safety and are not conducive to promoting equitable cross-strait exchangest.
TCGA calls on MainlandChina to recognize the importance of regional peace and stability. TCGA will continue to uphold a firm and responsible maritime law enforcement posture to safeguard the nation’s sovereign maritime rights.
