CGA Cutters Intercepts China Vessel Near Median Line to Safeguard Taiwanese Fishermen, July 20, 2024
ROC TCGA Cutters Intercepts Mainland Chinese Vessel Near Median Line to Safeguard Taiwanese Fishermen
To ensure the safety of Taiwanese fishing operations, the Republic of China Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA)’s Fleet Branch continues to deploy large Cutters and Patrol Vessels from the 8th (Penghu) Offshore Flotilla for around-the-clock patrols in key fishing grounds. These operations are aimed at preventing interference from Mainland China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels in the vicinity of Taiwan.
At approximately 12:00 on July 19, TCGA Cutter Changhua identified a CCG vessel Haijing 14504, operating 48.2 nautical miles west of Hua Islet, Penghu—about 1.3 nautical miles west of the median line. The CCG vessel was observed broadcasting warnings to the Penghu-registered fishing boat Long ○ Man, which was actively operating in the area. Changhua immediately maneuvered between the two vessels to shield the Taiwanese fishing boat and issued a radio call, demanding the CCG vessel to cease its interference.
Haijing 14504 eventually departed westward, exiting radar range. Changhua remained in the area to continue its patrol and ensure the safety of other local fishermen.
TCGA emphasized that all operations strictly follow the government’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Governmental Fisheries Protection, with pre-planned patrol operations to safeguard the rights and safety of Taiwanese fishermens. TCGA once again urges all fishermen to report any maritime incidents immediately by calling the toll-free Coast Guard Hotline at 118. TCGA will respond immediately to provide assistances needed.
