China Coast Guard Hsrassment in Kinmen Waters , August 21, 2024

Six Days After End of Fishing Moratorium, Mainland China Coast Guard Vessels Again Intrude into Kinmen Waters; ROC TCGA Carried Immediate Response

On August 21, the ROC Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) identified two separate incursions by four Mainland China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels into Taiwan’s Restricted Area near Kinmen—occurring at AM 08:50 PM 14:50. These actions came just six days after the end of Mainland China’s seasonal fishing moratorium, during which vessel traffic has significantly increased in the region.
At 08:50, four CCG vessels—14515, 14607, 14608, and 14504—approached Taiwan's Restricted Area from four directions, entering simultaneously from the south of Fuxing Islet, Jhuishan, Liaoluo, and Beiding Island. TCG’s Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch immediately dispatched four pre-positioned Patrol Boats, each conducting one-on-one parallel escort and expulsion operations.
At 14:50, the exact four CCG vessels returned to Kinmen waters from identical directions. TCGA launched a corresponding response with four Patrol Boats. During both incidents, TCGA assets broadcasted continuous warnings in Mandarin and English, conducted evidence documentation, and expelled the vessels. The CCG vessels exited Taiwan's Restricted Area by AM 11:00 and PM 17:00, with each intrusion lasting approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes.
TCGA stated that following the lifting of Mainland China’s summer fishing ban, there has been a surge in maritime activity in the area, raising the risk of navigational disorder. TCGA emphasized the importance of maritime safety and maintaining cross-strait stability, and called on Mainland China to immediately halt such disruptive actions.
Reaffirming its unwavering determination to defend national sovereignty and maritime rights, TCGA reiterated its commitment to the principles of “No Provocation, No Conflict, No Evasion, and No Feigning Weakness”, and pledged to maintain a resolute posture in safeguarding peace, order, and safety in Taiwan’s maritime zones.
