1140705-China Coast Guard Harassment in Dongsha Waters , Jul 5, 2025
China Coast Guard vessel intrudes into Dongsha Waters; Taiwan Coast Guard Administration strongly protests China’s Gray Zone harassment
Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) stated today (5th) that at 06:10 on July 2, China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel “3302” was detected 26 nautical miles northwest of Dongsha Island, entering Taiwan’s restricted waters.
TCGA immediately dispatched the Dongsha mission vessel “Yunlin” to conduct continuous escort monitoring and radio warnings to drive the vessel away.
At 01:24 on July 3, vessel “3302” was driven to 34.5 nautical miles east of Dongsha Island, continuing to sail away from Taiwan’s restricted waters.
TCGA pointed out that Dongsha Atoll National Park is Taiwan’s first marine national park established primarily for marine environmental conservation. However, since January this year, CCG vessels have conducted 18 harassment voyages involving 8 ships entering the restricted waters around Dongsha.
These vessels have adopted “dark ship” tactics, concealing their navigation tracks to interfere with Taiwan’s law enforcement operations and consume TCGA’s resources for combating illegal fishing, protecting reef ecosystems, and conducting humanitarian rescue missions.
From January to June this year, TCGA expelled 37 Chinese fishing vessels (136 vessel instances) from the Dongsha waters and detained 8 small boats.
Since May, China’s seasonal fishing moratorium has been in effect, yet Chinese fishing vessels have continued operations at sea, indicating failures in China’s maritime management. TCGA called on China to restrain its fishing vessels from illegally harvesting in Dongsha waters and damaging marine ecosystems.
TCGA emphasized that it will continue deploying large vessels to guard Dongsha waters, working together with multifunction patrol boats from the Dongsha detachment to provide round-the-clock protection, monitor Chinese vessel movements, safeguard national sovereignty, and ensure sustainable marine resource development.
