Mainland China Coast Guard Circles Matsu Islands During "Joint Sword-2024B" Drill; ROC TCGA Responds with Full Surveillance and Expulsion
On October 14, under the pretext of participating in Mainland China’s "Joint Sword-2024B" joint military exercise, Mainland China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels conducted continuous circling operations around Taiwan’s Matsu Islands—including Nangan, Beigan, and Dongyin—from 08:00 to 18:00. In response, the ROC Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) promptly dispatched Patrol Boats from 11th Patrol District to monitor, document, and expel the intruding vessels throughout the entire duration of the incident.
Starting at 08:00, four CCG vessels—hull numbers 14602, 14507, 14509, and 14517—entered the Restricted Area surrounding the Matsu Islands. Operating in two groups of two vessels each, they carried out prolonged circling maneuvers around the islands. TCGA Patrol Boats maintained close-range surveillance, issued repeated radio warnings in both Mandarin and English, and asserted Taiwan’s sovereign rights and law enforcement authority. The CCG vessels exited Taiwan waters by 18:00.
The intrusion was part of coordinated activities linked to the Eastern Theater Command’s Joint Sword-2024B exercise and represented a direct incursion into Taiwan’s maritime jurisdiction. The maneuver, involving extended encirclement of the Matsu Islands, seriously disrupted maritime navigation and posed a threat to regional peace and stability.
To date, there have been 46 recorded incursions by CCG vessels into Taiwan’s Restricted Area surrounding Kinmen and Matsu. TCGA strongly condemns these repeated acts of provocation and stresses that such behavior undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and contributes nothing to constructive cross-strait exchanges in economic, cultural, or other domains.
TCGA reaffirms its unwavering determination to defend national sovereignty and ocean rights. It will continue to uphold its guiding principles of “No Provocation, No Conflict, No Evasion, and No Feigning Weakness”, and will enforce the law with courage, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to maintaining maritime order and protecting the Republic of China Taiwan’s sovereign interests.
