CGA Responds to China Coast Guard's Joint Sword-2024B Encirclement Patrol Around Taiwan

Undeterred by Mainland China’s “Joint Sword” Exercises, ROC TCGA Repel CCG Vessels in Matsu Waters

At 05:00 on October 14, the Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) announced the commencement of the Joint Sword-2024B joint military exercise. The ROC Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) immediately completed its maritime response deployment based on collected information.
By 08:00, radar systems under 11th Patrol District detected two Mainland China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels assembling west of Nangan and another two northwest of Dongyin in the Matsu Islands. These four vessels subsequently entered Taiwan’s Restricted Area in two coordinated formations. TCGA’s Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch (KMP Branch) immediately dispatched four Patrol Boats to conduct surveillance and initiate expulsion procedures.
The four CCG vessels—hull numbers 14607 and 14517, and 14602 and 14509—approached from two directions, entering Taiwan’s waters at 3.2 nautical miles west of Nangan and 3.2 nautical miles northwest of Dongyin. TCGA deployed four Patrol Boats in a direct one-to-one response, implemented monitoring and radio warnings before driving the vessels out of the area.
To date, this latest incursion was part of the coordinated activities accompanying Joint Sword-2024B and marks the 44th intrusion by CCG vessels into Taiwan’s outlying island waters this year.
TCGA condemned these repeated incursions, emphasizing that such actions by Mainland China undermine the principles of mutual respect and do not contribute to peaceful cross-strait relations. TCGA called on Mainland China to recognize the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability.
Reaffirming its steadfast commitment to national sovereignty, TCGA stated that it will continue to uphold the principles of “No Provocation, No Conflict, No Evasion, and No Feigning Eeakness” and will confront such threats with determination and professionalism to preserve Taiwan’s maritime rights and security.
