1140804-China Coast Guard Hasrassment in Dongsha Waters , Aug 4, 2025
China Coast Guard vessel turns off AIS while harassing Dongsha Waters; Taiwan Coast Guard Administration dispatches “Xunhu No.8” for full monitoring and expulsion
At 14:50 on August 2, Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) Dongsha Command detected China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel “3102” sailing south 28.1 nautical miles northwest of Dongsha Island. Based on its course and speed, it was assessed that the vessel might enter Taiwan’s jurisdictional waters around Dongsha. Dongsha command immediately issued radio warnings ordering the vessel to leave. When no response was received, the Dongsha mission vessel “Xunhu No.8” was dispatched to the area.
At 17:34, “Xunhu No.8” arrived 10.3 nautical miles southwest of Dongsha Island and began monitoring the vessel while broadcasting warnings. At 18:10, vessel “3102” temporarily turned off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) system in an attempt to conceal its navigation track. Xunhu No.8 continued escort monitoring and used onboard radar to track its movements. At 19:35, vessel “3102” turned AIS back on and suddenly changed course northward. This maneuver may have been intended to test Taiwan’s maritime deployment and response capabilities. During the escort operation, the closest distance between the vessels was 1 nautical mile.
At 15:45 on August 3, CCG vessel “3102” sailed away from Dongsha waters 27.9 nautical miles north of Dongsha Island, heading north-northwest at 9 knots.
TCGA stated that CCG vessels have frequently harassed Taiwan’s Dongsha and Kinmen waters in recent years. At the end of July, China even announced joint sea and air combat readiness patrols near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, which is seen as a provocation toward countries in the region and a serious disruption to regional security and stability.
TCGA will continue deploying large patrol vessels to guard Dongsha waters and calls on countries with similar values to work together to maintain peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
