First day after National Referendum: China Coast Guard formation harasses Kinmen Waters
After Taiwan successfully completed the national referendum voting for Case No.21 on August 23, China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels conducted harassment operations in Kinmen waters the following day.
At 08:50 on August 24, four CCG ships — “14608,” “14527,” “14603,” and “14515” — entered Taiwan’s waters from southwest of Damao Mountain, sailing east in single-file formation while turning off their Automatic Identification System (AIS) systems.
Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) quickly detected the vessels and dispatched patrol boats to respond. The ships were expelled from the restricted waters at 11:00.
Later the same afternoon at 15:00, the same four vessels returned to harass Kinmen waters again. The pre-positioned patrol boats approached and issued firm warnings via Chinese and English radio broadcasts.
Under close escort and monitoring, the CCG vessels left the restricted waters at 17:10.
This was the first time in two years that CCG vessels conducted Gray Zone harassment operations on a Sunday holiday, occurring immediately after Taiwan completed a recall vote and national referendum.
Despite the unusual timing, TCGA emphasized that it remains on alert day and night, on weekdays and holidays, to safeguard national sovereignty and maritime security.
TCGA also urged China to stop such actions that undermine regional peace and stability and risk provoking resentment among people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
