1140913-China Coast Guard Harassment in Dongsha Waters , Sep 13, 2025

China Coast Guard vessel harasses Dongsha Waters; Taiwan Coast Guard Administration Vessels monitor and expel intruders
On September 11th at 06:15, Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) Dongsha Command detected the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel “3101” approximately 28 nautical miles northeast of Dongsha Island, heading toward Taiwan’s jurisdictional waters. Based on its course, it was determined that the vessel would enter Taiwan’s controlled waters. TCGA immediately directed vessel "Tainan" on duty to proceed to expel the vessel, and it closely monitored the movement of the CCG vessel.
CCG vessel “3101” exited Taiwan’s restricted waters on September 12th at 14:39, located 28.1 nautical miles north of Dongsha, heading northward.
On September 9th, the Chinese State Council announced the establishment of the so-called “Sovereign Reef National Nature Reserve,” illegally unilaterally designating the area around the disputed Scarborough Shoal (referred to as “Huangyan Island” by China) as a protected area under the guise of enhancing regulatory enforcement. Despite this, CCG vessels continue to harass the Dongsha Atoll National Park waters. The Dongsha National Park is one of Taiwan’s highest-level marine conservation zones, where all forms of fishing and angling are strictly prohibited.
Since the beginning of 2023, TCGA has expelled 145 Chinese fishing vessels that illegally entered the Dongsha waters, detained 10 small boats, and repeatedly cracked down on illegal fishing activities. Some of these Chinese fishing vessels have engaged in ruthless actions, such as overfishing, eating endangered green sea turtles, and cutting down coral reefs, demonstrating China's failure to protect the ecological environment in this region.
In recent years, CCG vessels have frequently provoked and infringed upon neighboring countries’ waters in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region, affecting regional stability and security. China has also continued to employ Gray Zone Strategy to harass Taiwan’s Dongsha waters. TCGA will continue to deploy ships to patrol and safeguard Dongsha waters, firmly defending Taiwan’s sovereignty.
TCGA emphasizes: Taiwan is an indispensable democratic country in the Indo-Pacific region, and a key player in maintaining regional and global security. Taiwan hopes to unite with like-minded nations to jointly preserve peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
