China Coast Guard Exploits Adverse Sea Conditions to Harass Kinmen Water; Taiwan Coast Guard Braves Rough Seas to Conduct Parallel Monitoring and Firmly Expels Intruding Vessels
April 24, 2026
Recently affected by a passing weather front, sea conditions in the Kinmen Water have deteriorated, with gusts reaching Beaufort Force 8 to 9. Despite the adverse conditions, the 12th Patrol Area under the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch, along with its subordinate units, remained on duty, maintaining continuous surveillance of maritime targets.
TCGA detected renewed harassment by China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels and immediately deployed patrol boats forward to positions along the Restricted Water boundary to respond.
At approximately 08:00, the 12th Patrol Area detected four CCG vessels — 14609, 14531, 14604, and 14530 — approaching water south of Kinmen from offshore areas.
At 09:00, the vessels entered the Kinmen Restricted Water in formation from the east of Liaoluo and from the southern approach.
Four pre-deployed TCGA patrol boats immediately moved forward to conduct one-on-one parallel monitoring, while issuing radio warnings in Mandarin and English, demanding that the vessels alter course and depart.
TCGA patrol boats conducted continuous evidence documentation and parallel expulsion operations throughout the incident. The CCG vessels were ultimately expelled and exited the Kinmen Restricted Water at 11:03.
The Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch stated that the China Coast Guard persisted in conducting formation intrusions despite poor sea conditions, disregarding navigational safety and posing risks to passing vessels. Such actions are unprofessional and irrational.
The Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch emphasized that safeguarding national sovereignty is the TCGA’s core responsibility and mission. Regardless of adverse weather or challenging operational conditions, TCGA will continue to maintain round-the-clock high-intensity surveillance, response, and deployment capabilities, demonstrating its firm commitment to defending national security.
