1150526-China Coast Guard Harassment in Kinmen Waters , May 26, 2026
Following the China Coast Guard (CCG) intrusion into Taiwan’s Dongsha water on May 23, which was firmly countered and expelled by the TCGA cutter Taichung, the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) again responded forcefully on May 26 to a formation intrusion by CCG vessels near the Kinmen Restricted and Prohibited Water boundary, demonstrating Taiwan’s firm resolve and operational capability to safeguard maritime security and national sovereignty.
At approximately 14:00, the 12th Patrol Area under the TCGA Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch detected four CCG vessels as 14606, 14530, 14609, and 14531 which are approaching the Kinmen Restricted Water. TCGA immediately deployed pre-positioned patrol boats forward to positions along the Restricted Water boundary.
At 14:53, the four CCG vessels entered the Kinmen Restricted Water from the south of Lieyu in a single-file column formation, approaching the boundary of Taiwan’s Prohibited Water.
TCGA patrol boats immediately conducted one-on-one parallel monitoring, carried out continuous evidence documentation, and employed close-range interception measures, while issuing firm radio warnings in Mandarin and English demanding that the vessels alter course and depart immediately.
Demonstrating its unwavering position on sovereignty protection and maritime security enforcement, TCGA patrol boats successfully compelled all four CCG vessels to exit the Kinmen Restricted Water at 17:09.
During the operational response, the Mainland China Coast Guard repeated its longstanding claim of jurisdiction over the water concerned. TCGA firmly rejected such false assertions, condemning Mainland China’s continued dissemination of misleading claims regarding jurisdiction over the Kinmen water, as well as its irrational harassment activities.
TCGA emphasized that standard operating procedures have been fully established for responding to CCG intrusion activities. Taiwan possesses both the determination to defend its sovereignty and the capability to maintain peace. TCGA will continue to stand on the front line of maritime defense, firmly safeguarding every inch of Taiwan’s maritime territory.
