China Coast Guard Vessel and Survey Vessel Successively Intrude into Dongsha Water; Taiwan Coast Guard Deploys Additional Assets Including Kaohsiung Cutter for Monitoring and Response

Following the intrusion of China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 3501 into Taiwan’s Dongsha Restricted Water at 08:00 on June 5, Taiwan Coast Guard Patrol Vessel Hsun Hu No. 9 immediately conducted parallel monitoring and expulsion operations despite repeated provocations. The situation remains ongoing, with the Taiwan Coast Guard cutter Changhua continuing response operations on scene.

At 06:28 on June 6, Taiwan Coast Guard further detected the China survey vessel Hai Si Lu No. 6 approximately 32.7 nautical miles southeast of Dongsha Island entering Taiwan’s water. Taiwan Coast Guard immediately dispatched the cutter Kaohsiung to reinforce operations, working in coordination with Dongsha patrol boats CP-1025 and CP-1082.

Following the illegal deployment of scientific instruments by the China research vessel Tong Ji on May 7 and May 15 in water southeast of Eluanbi and east of Hualien, this latest incident marks another unauthorized entry into Taiwan’s water by a China survey vessel. It is also the first recorded case of a survey vessel and a China Coast Guard vessel jointly conducting operations in the area.

During lawful expulsion operations against CCG vessel 3501, the vessel repeatedly claimed over radio that it was conducting law-enforcement activities. Taiwan Coast Guard cutters immediately rejected such assertions and reiterated that the vessel had entered Taiwan’s water without authorization and must depart immediately.

Taiwan Coast Guard emphasized that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to one another, and that only the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration has the authority to conduct law-enforcement operations in the water surrounding Dongsha.

By sending both Coast Guard and survey vessels into Dongsha water, China seeks to create the false impression that it exercises jurisdiction over the area. Such actions undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and make China a source of tension in regional affairs. Taiwan Coast Guard strongly condemns these activities.

Taiwan Coast Guard further stresses that Taiwan’s maritime sovereignty will not be challenged. Taiwan Coast Guard possesses both the determination to defend national sovereignty and the capability to preserve peace. Taiwan Coast Guard will take all necessary measures to deter unreasonable actions, firmly safeguard national sovereignty, and ensure maritime security.
