Taiwan Coast Guard Strongly Rebuts China’s Claimed “Maritime Traffic Enforcement Operation” Near Taiwan; Firmly Safeguards National Sovereignty and Maritime Security
Regarding the announcement by China’s Ministry of Transport claiming that it would conduct a so-called “Maritime Traffic Enforcement Operation” in water east of Taiwan and that relevant vessels were expected to arrive in the area on June 7, the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) emphasizes that China enjoys no sovereign rights or jurisdiction in Taiwan’s eastern water. Such claims violate international law and seriously distort the facts. TCGA therefore issues the following clarification:
1.Through integrated surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence-gathering capabilities, TCGA has maintained full awareness of the movements of the relevant China vessels and has deployed appropriate assets to respond. TCGA has detected four China government vessels — Haixun 06, Haixun 08, Haixun 09, and Donghai Jiu 113 — departing Xiamen and proceeding toward water southwest of Taiwan while navigating outside Taiwan’s Restricted Water boundary.
TCGA proactively deployed the cutters Tamsui, Ji’an, Kaohsiung, Changbin, and Hualien, and additionally positioned 100-ton patrol vessels along the 24-nautical-mile line to support monitoring operations. Throughout the operation, the China government vessels did not enter Taiwan’s Restricted Water, and maritime traffic around Taiwan continued to operate normally.
2. Following the activities of the China research vessel Tong Ji around Taiwan in May, the recent intrusions into Dongsha water by China Coast Guard vessels and the survey vessel Hai Si Lu No. 6, and now this so-called “Maritime Traffic Enforcement Operation” targeting water east of Taiwan, China has continued to escalate its gray-zone harassment activities against Taiwan.
By attempting to create the false impression that it possesses jurisdiction over Taiwan’s surrounding water and by seeking to unilaterally alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, China is acting in violation of international law and in direct contradiction to established facts. TCGA strongly condemns such actions.
TCGA will continue to take all necessary measures and actions to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and ensure the security of Taiwan’s maritime domain.
