Chinese Coast Guard Harasses Dongsha Water During Dragon Boat Festival;Taiwan Coast Guard Cutter Tainan Conducts Close-Range Interception and Orders Immediate Departure
The Dongsha-Nansha Branch of the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration (TCGA) detected Chinese Coast Guard(CCG) vessel 3101 outside the restricted water of Dongsha Island at 1225 on June 19. Based on the vessel’s course and movements, the TCGA assessed that it intended to intrude into Dongsha water. The TCGA immediately deployed cutter Tainan in advance to intercept and monitor the vessel.
During the operation, TCGA personnel intercepted a radio transmission from CCG vessel 3101 stating: “Our vessel is conducting routine patrol and law-enforcement operations in water under the jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of China. Please report your next intended movement.”
TCGA cutter Tainan immediately responded with a firm warning: “This is the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of China (Taiwan). You possess no sovereign rights or jurisdiction in these water. Your actions are in violation of international conventions and relevant regulations. I demand that you leave immediately.”
At 1500 , CCG vessel 3101 entered the restricted water of Dongsha Island approximately 24 nautical miles northwest of the island. Cutter Tainan immediately initiated close-range parallel monitoring operations, with the closest distance between the two vessels reduced to approximately 0.5 nautical miles. TCGA personnel continued to apply pressure through repeated radio broadcasts in both Chinese and English ordering the vessel to depart.
During the confrontation, CCG vessel 3101 again transmitted the following message: “Our vessel is carrying out law-enforcement activities. Please do not interfere with our mission. Both sides of the Strait belong to one China. We should all be proud Chinese people. Please communicate in Chinese.”
TCGA Cutter Tainan immediately issued a strong rebuttal:
“The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent nation and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China. This is an undeniable fact and the current reality. You have entered our water without authorization, in violation of international law, and your actions are affecting maritime order and security. Alter your course immediately and leave our water. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are vital to the global economy and the international technology industry. Any conflict would result in international sanctions against your side. Maritime stability is essential for your country’s development. We urge you to act prudently for the sake of peace across the Taiwan Strait.”
As of this release, the two vessels remain engaged in a standoff within the Dongsha restricted water.
The Dongsha-Nansha Branch stated that China’s continued intrusion into Dongsha water during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday demonstrates that it has not ceased applying pressure through gray-zone tactics. Since the beginning of 2026, the TCGA has expelled Chinese Coast Guard vessels from the Dongsha restricted water on eight occasions involving four different vessels.
The TCGA further noted that these actions are consistent with recent incursions by Chinese government vessels and research ships into Taiwan’s water. Under various pretexts, China continues to pursue expansionist objectives while undermining regional peace and stability. The TCGA strongly condemns these actions.
The TCGA emphasized that the sovereignty of the Republic of China cannot be challenged or diminished. China’s attempts to create false narratives of jurisdiction through maritime operations and other forms of harassment will never alter this indisputable reality. The TCGA will continue to employ all necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty and ensure the security of Taiwan’s maritime domain.
