China Coast Guard(CCG) Vessel Forcibly Enters Dongsha Restricted Waters; Coast Guard Administration(CGA) Patrol Vessel Hsun Hu No. 9 Conducts Close Interception and Drives It Away
At 0732 hours today (June 5), the CGA patrol vessel Hsun Hu No. 9 detected the CCG vessel 3501 approximately 37.8 nautical miles northeast of Dongsha Island (3.5 nautical miles outside the restricted waters). Hsun Hu No. 9 immediately proceeded to intercept the vessel and repeatedly broadcast warnings ordering it to leave.

At 0800 hours, the Chinese Coast Guard vessel disregarded the navigation safety of the CGA patrol vessel by deliberately accelerating from 5 knots to 9 knots and making a sudden sharp turn into the Dongsha restricted waters. Hsun Hu No. 9 remained undeterred, maintaining close escort and surveillance while continuing operations to expel the vessel. The two sides remain in an ongoing standoff.

This incident follows previous unlawful activities by the Chinese research vessel Tongji, which, on May 7 and May 15, illegally deployed scientific instruments 29 nautical miles southeast of Eluanbi and 33 nautical miles east of Hualien Port, respectively. China has once again engaged in provocative and unreasonable actions against Taiwan. While the Tongji conducted seawater sampling and seabed survey operations, the CGA vessel Lanyang lawfully carried out warning and expulsion operations. During those operations, the Chinese vessel used its wireless radio to repeatedly broadcast provocative political slogans, claiming that “There is no Republic of China; there is only the People’s Republic of China.”

In this latest incident, C C G vessel 3501 forcibly crossed into the Dongsha restricted waters, further escalating the level of intrusion and openly challenging Taiwan’s sovereignty. Hsun Hu No. 9 responded by conducting close pursuit and wake-making maneuvers while continuously escorting and monitoring the vessel. The CGA also repeatedly issued warnings in both Chinese and English. The two sides engaged in heated verbal exchanges over the radio. At present, Hsun Hu No. 9 remains on scene confronting Chinese Coast Guard vessel 3501.

The CGA emphasizes that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to one another, and that the CGA has full authority to enforce the law within the waters surrounding Dongsha. China’s intrusion into the Dongsha restricted waters is an attempt to fabricate the false impression that it exercises “jurisdiction” over the area. Such actions not only undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait but also make China a source of regional instability.

The CGA strongly condemns these actions and reiterates that Taiwan’s maritime sovereignty is not subject to challenge. The CGA possesses both the determination to safeguard national sovereignty and the capability to maintain peace. It will continue to employ all necessary measures to stop China’s unreasonable actions, firmly defend national sovereignty, and ensure the security of Taiwan’s maritime domain.
warnings, all four CCG vessels departed the Kinmen Restricted Water at 1113.

The Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch stated that while the CGA remains fully committed to typhoon preparedness and emergency response operations, it has not relaxed its responsibilities for safeguarding maritime security and protecting national sovereignty. The CCG’s continued gray-zone harassment on the eve of the typhoon not only undermines regional peace and stability but also increases navigational risks at sea, demonstrating conduct that is both irresponsible and unprofessional.

The Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch emphasized that the CGA has established a comprehensive response mechanism to counter China’s gray-zone activities. It will continue to maintain high-intensity intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, rapid operational response, and forward deployment of patrol assets to steadfastly safeguard national sovereignty and ensure the security of Taiwan’s maritime domain.
