Taiwan Coast Guard Closely Monitors Chinese Coast Guard Patrols East of Taiwan；Firmly Rebuts China’s “Law Enforcement in Name, Expansion of Jurisdiction in Reality” Narrative

In response to the statement issued by the China Coast Guard claiming that, on July 4, the Xiushan formation had replaced the Daishan formation and would continue conducting patrols in water east of Taiwan, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) has deployed the cutters “Bali” and “Hualien” to conduct continuous monitoring and response operations. The CGA also strongly rejects China’s attempt to use so-called law-enforcement patrols as a pretext to expand its jurisdiction and conduct cognitive warfare, and hereby clarifies the following:

I. CGA Maintains Full Situational Awareness and Continuous Monitoring：
Through integrated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, the CGA has maintained close monitoring of the movements of China Coast Guard vessels 2305 (Xiushan) and 1401 (Chongming).

At 0925 on July 4, both vessels were navigating approximately 54 nautical miles east of Hualien Port, or 27 nautical miles outside Taiwan’s Restricted Water, proceeding toward the open sea. The CGA had already deployed cutters “Bali” and “Hualien” in advance to conduct parallel monitoring operations.
II. Taiwan’s Maritime Jurisdiction Is Protected Under International Law：
The CGA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent nation and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China.

Under international law, “the land dominates the sea.” Accordingly, Taiwan enjoys sovereign rights and jurisdiction within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) east of Taiwan. China possesses no sovereign rights or jurisdiction in any of Taiwan’s surrounding water.

China’s continued attempts to create a false impression of jurisdiction through maritime patrols and other forms of harassment cannot alter this indisputable legal and factual reality.

The CGA will continue to take all necessary measures to monitor and firmly expel Chinese vessels engaged in harassment activities within Taiwan’s maritime jurisdiction. The CGA remains steadfast in safeguarding national sovereignty, protecting Taiwan’s maritime rights and interests, and ensuring the security of Taiwan’s maritime domain.
