The China Coast Guard(CCG) Intrudes into Dongsha Waters Following Conclusion of Han Kuang Exercise
；Coast Guard Cutter Yunlin Sails Alongside and Drives Intruders Away to Safeguard Dongsha
At 7:00 a.m. today (August 18), the Dongsha Command of the Coast Guard Administration (CGA)’s Southeast Branch detected China Coast Guard vessels CCG 3303 and CCG 3107 operating just outside Taiwan’s restricted waters surrounding Dongsha. Based on their course, the vessels were assessed as intending to enter Taiwan’s restricted waters. The CGA immediately dispatched the cutter Yunlin to deploy ahead of the vessels and intercept them, while the cutter Tainan was urgently deployed as reinforcement.
At 8:42 a.m., CCG 3303 and CCG 3107 entered the restricted waters around Dongsha. The Yunlin immediately sailed alongside the vessels to monitor their movements and issued firm warnings in both Mandarin Chinese and English ordering them to leave. The CGA continues to closely monitor the situation and maintain a standoff with the Chinese vessels.
The CGA stated that, since the beginning of 2026, it has expelled China Coast Guard vessels from the restricted waters around Dongsha on 11 occasions involving five vessels. This latest intrusion, in which China dispatched two coast guard vessels into Taiwan’s restricted waters immediately following the conclusion of the Han Kuang Exercise, is essentially no different from its pattern of “law enforcement in name, expansion of jurisdiction in practice” in waters east of Taiwan. Such actions seriously undermine regional peace and stability.
The CGA further noted that, while the Yunlin was broadcasting warnings ordering the vessels to leave, CCG 3303 maliciously referred to it as the “China Taiwan Coast Guard Administration cutter Yunlin,” spreading false and misleading information that is entirely inconsistent with reality. The CGA strongly condemns such political manipulation by China.
The CGA emphasized that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, and neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. Only the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration has the authority to conduct law enforcement operations in the waters surrounding Dongsha.
By allowing its coast guard vessels to intrude into Dongsha waters in an attempt to create the false impression that China exercises jurisdiction over the area, China has become a troublemaker undermining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The CGA reiterated that Taiwan’s national sovereignty will not tolerate provocation. The Coast Guard Administration has both the determination to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty and the capability to preserve peace. It will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and maritime security.
