1151013-Taiwan Coast Guard Deploys to Counter China's Gray-Zone Incursion
China Coast Guard’s Gray-Zone Incursions Disrupt Maritime Order, Taiwan Coast Guard Deploys Proactively to Safeguard National Sovereignty.
Shortly after Taiwan’s National Day holiday, China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels once again intruded into the waters surrounding Kinmen on October 13. The 12th Patrol District of the Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch, Coast Guard Administration (CGA), detected the approaching vessels in advance and immediately dispatched patrol vessels to intercept and expel them. Throughout the operation, the CGA closely monitored the movements of the CCG vessels to maintain maritime order and safeguard national sovereignty.
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on October 13, the 12th Patrol District detected four CCG vessels, numbered 14608, 14531, 14607, and 14529, approaching Kinmen’s restricted waters in an unusual formation. In response, the CGA immediately deployed patrol vessels to positions along the outer boundary of the restricted waters.
At 8:52 a.m., the four CCG vessels entered Kinmen’s restricted waters from the south of Lieyu Island in a single-file formation. CGA patrol vessels immediately conducted one-on-one parallel monitoring operations while documenting the entire incident as evidence. Through firm warnings broadcast in both Mandarin and English, along with close-range interception and deterrence measures, CGA personnel prevented the Chinese vessels from advancing further into Taiwan’s waters.
These actions demonstrated the CGA’s firm commitment to defending national sovereignty and maintaining maritime security. All four CCG vessels eventually departed Kinmen waters by 11:08 a.m.
Based on an analysis of the CCG vessels’navigation patterns, the CGA stated that these incursions were “law enforcement in name, jurisdictional expansion in practice.” Such actions represent an attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo and pose a serious threat to maritime safety and navigational order.
The CGA calls on the China Coast Guard to immediately cease all harassment and provocative activities that could trigger conflicts or escalate tensions. The CGA will continue to deploy patrol vessels around the clock, maintain close surveillance, and respond decisively to any incursions in order to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and maritime security.
