The Office was formerly the Coastal Patrol Command of Southern Area”, subordinate to the Ministry of National Defense. The tasks of coastal defense had been performed by various units in the past; in order to realize centralized command and management, the Legislative Yuan passed the Organizational Law of Coast Guard Administration, Executive Yuan on January 16, 2000, which was promulgated by the President. On February 1 in the same year, the Coast Guard Administration, Executive Yuan was officially established, and the Southern Coastal Patrol Office was also established according to the Organizational General Rules of Regional Coastal Patrol Agency.

Since the establishment, two major adjustments have been made. On April 1, 2002, in accordance with the policy of “flattening of organizational structure”, the Office followed the political direction of the Coastal Patrol Administration to integrate some coastal patrol corps and command system at company level and organize patrol stations.

The other adjustment was made on September 1, 2003 to effectively enhance administrative efficiency at subordinate units and the Office itself, take concerted action with the establishments of patrol boat units and coastal radars, give full scope of the spirit of “replacing human labor with technology equipment”, improve the performance of coastal patrol units at basic level, reduce the number of patrol stations, and make the assignment of equipment and human resources more rational.

To fulfill the spirits of the “system of regional duty” and “unified coastal and maritime duties”, patrol areas had been established since July 1, 2005 in Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Penghu for coordinating all coastal and maritime units within the duty area for joint patrol operations to achieve the goals of information and intelligence sharing and coordinated services.

Since the establishment of the Office, with the direction from our superior commanders and officers at all levels, all of our colleagues are able to give full efforts and overcome difficulties. The Office also brings its spirit of constant innovation to the fullest in the enhancement of mission readiness of every unit, the active cultivation of high efficient organizational culture, maximizing coordination and cooperation, establishment of strong and solid coastal line, thorough suppression of crimes such as smuggling and illegal immigration, sufficient implementation of overall efficacy, and the maintenance of national security.
